I've just started playing again, after about a year off and I've gone
into the sound options and now when I click the "3d sound" (can't
remember the exact name of the option) and the "envionmental effects"
below it, they make a 'clunk' noise and the sound stops for a split
second and then starts again but the options still say 'off' instead
of toggling to 'on' neither option is faded out in the way which
perspective would be if running in 2d video mode... Never seen this
before and I haven't changed any hardeware around but I'm sure i've
reinstalled windows a few times since last playing.

3D SOUND: ON or OFF (OFF disables 3D BIAS and ENV. EFFECTS)
ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS: ON or OFF

those are the two options which I was talking about.
