Been a damn long time since I've wandered through here, looks like the
cobwebs are startin' to get a bit thick over the old lime-jello hottub
in the clubhouse. Readin back through a few of the actual threads
posted in the past six months or so, I see some familiar old names.
Heya ald, Mickey, Evilbill, Mousehill, Duncan and the others whose
names elude me at the moment.

Just thought I'd dust off a seat and prepare for the Third Coming of
Diablo, however long off in the future that may be. One thing I'm sure
of, is it will be great. And it will no doubt bring back many of the
old crew once again. Be good to see more of the barrel huggers and
splinter lovers once again, in all their wildass glory :-)

Been around 11 years now since I first discovered usenet and stumbled
into AGD... and thought "damn, this is one weird-ass collection of
people." Long live weirdness! <grin>

Who's around these days? Justus... sound off!

Justus of AGD shall ride again when the time comes- we'll see to it.

Heya ald, good to see you keepin' the faith. I believe this place will
be a hoppin' again in advance of D3's release, but a bit early for too
much excitement yet, I reckon. I see you keep quite a stable of old D2
characters, from your sig. I haven't touched it since, hmm... middle
of 2003, I guess it was, when I finally burned out on it. One too many
cow runs and Meph runs.

It's really amazing to me to think that anyone is actually playing the
game still, almost six years after I burned out, and with no added
content since then. Even with mods, it's gotta be gettin' a tidge long
in the tooth for anybody but a pure noobie, anymore. Plus, I've gotten
addicted to actually seeing the features of my character's face,
something always sadly lacking in D2. Huge, high-rez fully 3D worlds
are kindof addictive, too. The small maps, amorphic faces and static
isometric world of D2 just don't cut it anymore for me. But from what
I've seen of D3 so far, there will be no lack of detail and high-rez
glory in the offing :-)

Are there still many people playing D2 on battle.net, or has it slowed
down a lot in the past few years?

Sadly, all of the MP characters in my sig are only alive there still,
they got lost in one or another of my forced absences from playing
online, although the SP ones are still around here *some*where, I
just haven't played them in forever (last time I was playing SP I was
working a rotation of about 2 characters in each of three mods and the
original game, but (thankfully?) they never got high enough level to
make it into my sig).

2003 was late enough for you to have seen UT, right? Heh, I should
talk, I still haven't worked an MP character high enough to even
*think* about trying it ;-)

I rarely see anyone I know on BNet anymore, but then again I see most
of them in WoW, and I usually only play BNet on Tuesday mornings.

Hey Marshall!

Good to see a familiar face again, so to speak.

I still play hardcore on bnet from time to time, so I really hardly ever
see anyone.

Looking forward to D3 as well, assuming I can afford a machine it'll run
on when it comes.

Hope life's been good to you.

Mark.

What is UT? Don't remember that acronym.

I think just about everyone who migrated from Diablo to WoW, will be
returning for at least a sample of D3. It's been way too long since
the series had any luvin' from Blizzard, and for a huge number of
people, Diablo 1 and/or 2 were there first loves, before WoW ever came
along. I'm hoping that D3's revamped battle.net will be an improvement
over the ancient and outdated one we've known up until now- it was so
primitive and lacking in features and options. Be interesting to see
what improvements they make.

Oh, I haven't reloaded D2/LoD, but you mentioned losing your
multiplayer chars after an extended absence- I don't suppose there's
any chance that I still have any of my old MP chars still left, after
a 6-year absence? LOL! Probby not.

Thanks, Mark, been doing ok :-) Good to see you again too! I'm sure
I'll be investing in an updated PC by the time D3 hits the streets,
hopefully one with Windows 7 on it, and not Vista ;-) I'm still on XP
at this time, never did take a fancy to the upstart.

Was just on Blizzard's site checking out some of the screenshots and
videos, and the mage looks pretty darn cool. They've had a lot of
years for their concept artists to perfect some awfully nice-looking
spell affects... I drool just seeing these short vids. The
realtime-physics are pretty neat, too. Be interesting to see what kind
of machine it will take, to do all of it justice.

Uber Tristram, where you fight three of the act end bosses on steroids
;-) Hopefully someone who's a bit more familiar with it can refresh my
memory as to exactly who it is, and the rewards that are possible.

Actually, they changed that recently, so that if no one started a
character with the same name, you can still res expired characters.
Might be worth a try ;-)

Nah, it was just idle curiosity. I have no desire to resurrect my old

No, it's in the regular game. IIRC, you collect keys from Nilithak,
the Countess, and one other in Hell, and use them to open the portals
to Uber Tristram. Could somebody *please* jump in here and clarify
this? I'm about at the end of my memory here, and *way* beyond my
experience.

In hell diff you run the Countess, the summoner in Act 2 and Nilithak.
You want to collect 3 keys from each of them for a total of 9 keys.
Then while you're in Horagath (act 5 town), you put 1 of each type
into the horadric cube and use the cube to turn them into a portal.
There are 3 possible portals that can appear, though you can't get
more than one portal of the same type in the same game, which is why
you want 9 keys, so you can do the transmute three times and be sure
of getting all 3 portals. Inside the portals you'll wander around for
a bit until you find it's boss. There's an Andarial type boss, an
Izual type boss and a Duriel type boss (they're tougher than the
bosses they're a copy of). You kill them and get a body part from
them. You then use the three different body parts in the horadric
cube (while in Horagath) to get the portal to Uber Tristram. Once in
there you have a Mephisto clone, a Baal clone and a Diablo clone to
kill. The Mephisto clone tends to be the nastiest as it has an aura
that does *really* nasty things to your resistances. When you kill
the third of these clones (doesn't matter what order) it will drop a
torch with +3 to all skills of some particular class. ie +3 sorc
skills or +3 druid skills. It also has like +20 stats, +20 resistance
and a chance to cast Diablo's creeping fire thingy on attack. It's
the same size as a medium charm.

I used to farm them up using a Fireball/Frozen orb sorc to gather the
keys, make the portals and teleport to the minibosses, then open a
town portal to let my smiter in on my second computer to do the actual
killing of the bosses. The smiter also handled Uber Tristram's three
clones.

Hmm. Never saw that, must have been added after I bailed. /waves...
Hi Ashen :-)

Sounds like an interesting diversion for once you've mastered hell
level (something I never did, personally), but hardly a post-LoD
expansion pack ;-) I remember getting frustrated from running a
bazillion meph/baal runs (and cow runs) and never seeing a Windforce
(or several other overly-elusive items), so I got to playing mods that
allowed you to pretty easily avail yourself of everything in the game.
Real monty-haul stuff. Wasn't long after that I hung 'er up, if I
recall. The duping and all that was so incredibly pervasive too at
that time, that it just lost my interest. There was no real economy
anymore. I'm hoping they master the art of preventing that stuff, in
D3. Guess we'll find out.

The drop rates of elite items has been changed. It's now possible to get
elite items through regular playing, particularly the elite sets. The
entire economy has also changed because of new runewords. Pul runes are
now currency, for instance, and uber runewords are attainable with some
savvy trading. There is an economy, it's just a very different one than
before (trading 40 perfect gems for puls then trading puls and ums for
vexes and jahs or whatnot is relatively normal).

These days, nobody wants a Windforce though. With the release of 1.10,
the entire way in which we played and the most desirable character
classes have changed.

Uber Tristram is a challenge, though not an insurmountable one. It's
good fun.

These days, 0t (who coincidentally brought up your name in the past few
weeks as it popped into his head), my sister, my hubby, and I play once
a week. We played a few teams, a motley crew of puritans and are now
doing puritan scorching paladins who are struggling in Hell because of
their craptacular gear, but that's the way we like it. We have other
characters with good gear, but where's the fun in that? ;-)

0tarin, my sister and I defected to Guild Wars because we're too cheap
to pay monthly fees. Also, we're mainly gaming to chat (now via Skype, I
know what the great and powerful wombat stuffer sounds like) and goof
off. We are, as always, Carl. We have our own neglected web site where
we attempt to bestow our philosphy on others whether they want us to or
not. http://the3carls.blogspot.com/

And, hello stranger. :-) I haven't been posting or reading AGD and only
popped by today.

We'll all be back for Diablo 3.

Heh. Puritan = no twinking (must find their own gear)
Scorching = scorched earth - must kill everything in every nook and
cranny at least once (we can't leave the table until we clean our
plates)

Ah, how little 0t has grown! He's been doing pretty well, at least in my
estimation. He graduated from college and has been gainfully employed
for, I believe, 2 years now. It amazes me that I first stumbled upon him
when he was at the tender age of 19 and now he's 26.

0t is and always be the wombat stuffing king.

I think a lot of us dropped out when the newsgroup was consumed by
voracious political cross-posting. That seems to have disappeared for
now. I'll keep an eye open and try to pop by. I'll encourage 0t to do so
as well. That being said, I no longer actually call him "0t", but I do
make fun of him all the time (he loves it though).

Well, lessee... taking a wild guess that D3 might be out in 1.5 years,
that's 547 days. A pretty decent gameplayin' PC right now can be had
for a lot less than $1000, and I'm sure there will be even more
powerful PC's available then for the same price if not even lower
yet... but, going with the $1000 figure, just for the sake of having a
number to plug into my calculator, that's about $1.83 a day from now
till then. Chump change! You spend more than that on tic tacs, fess
up! :-D Now get to savin', no excuses!
