OT (sort of) - Very frustrating

I don't know if I should weep - for joy AND sorrow - or scream.
I finally got dsl.
Yay!
Somehow tho, installing it's software totally fouled up my sound.
Boo!
First, it did not install clean anyway. I had to hack around a bit to get
the interweb workin, but I know it was not me that messed up the sound.
The sound was gone *and* I had no internet, then I had internet but still
no sound.

I have gone from avg ping of 240 or more, to 50ish!!! But I can / will
not play because I have no sound whatsoever. Too many clues from the
sounds, heh, maybe if I was still sc, but not in hc - can't even hear the
char grunt when getting hit.

I have already spent over four hours trying to research / fix this.
Downloading drivers, installing, uninstalling, reinstalling, etc, etc.
I will get it figured out, but the help files these days are so basic it
is insulting. Yes, Microsoft, they are plugged in _and_ the volume is up.
And, while google can be a good tool, the internet is getting more 'fluff'
everyday, weeding through a half dozen 'tech forums' where the problems
discussed are mostly almost as basic as mentioned above is time consuming
and usually non-productive besides - they only repeat MS's pablum.

Heck, I will go buy the new computer I was thinking about if I must. I
want that anyway. :)
This one can keep a mule game open or park one in the game I am playing in
to up the exp I get.
Ok, rant and brag done. Bed time, past bed time.

Oh, yeah, the real irony of my new dsl? It will be costing me two dollars
less each month than my dial-up.

I'm now on cable but I've used DSL before, from two different
providers. I never install their proprietary software (both DSL
and cable) after the first attempt, because they always screwed
up something. I've figured that you don't need their software.
As long as you can get your static IP address and/or gateway IP
address assigned, you're set to go. Windows' Internet connection
wiz will get everything set up.

Agreed. I've never had a problem getting online, but then I do connect
through a router.

Agreed--NEVER install the software that comes with your DSL contract.

Art, if you have a roll-back point, I would use it and just set the
networking up from Windows, using the wizard.

Mark.

I did get everything working on my end, heh, but I don't think I have fully
'registered' with ATT/Yahoo since I can not get my email or sign in at
their home page. I never did 'finish' installing their software so it never
'finalized' with them I think. I plan on calling them once I get home
tonight to see if we can get their donkeys straightened out. :)
As I was playing last night, their computer called me to tell me that it
(the dsl) was activated. Like, duh, no kidding. lol
But, boy oh boy, what a difference. I may have been slightly off with
saying that I was now averaging a ping of 50, but it is almost always under
100, with most times showing 62 or 78, but regularly showing 46 or 47 at
times also.

Hey, Art!

I too have ATT/Yahoo, and I never installed anything of theirs. I can still
get my mail via pop or their web mail, and (boy, oh boy!) have a free
geocities page. Maybe they just haven't activated everything for you yet.

I must say the only time I called them, the service was polite and
effective.

Those nice low ping times will mean you will live a lot longer, too!

Best,
      Mark.
