I was in battle.net yesterday and met this guy. He showed me a
ring called 'gnarled root'. Before that time, I always thought
that gnarled root was a club. Is the ring version of it legitimate?
If so, it's pretty nice (+300 damage +10 dex +10 resist all and other
modifiers I don't remember).

No such item exists.  It is a hack.
