Diablo web sites - flame and query

One thing I'd like to say is that there are too many Diablo sites. Have
you looked at
http://www.yahoo.com/Recreation/Games/Computer_Games/Genres/Role_Playing/Titles/Diablo/
lately? It looks like there's more web pages than players! When are
people going to learn that slapping together some graphics and add a
<blink>this game is cool</blink> does not constitute valuable content.

That having been said, what site(s) out there is comprehensive with it's
information?

I came across http://www.citystuff.com/xanthus/unique.html which is an
excellent list of unique items, both in presentation and content, but has
nothing else interesting on it's site.

http://www.gac.edu/~mjohnson/Diablo/unique-items.html has a list of
uniques, but is missing some of the items like Eaglehorn, and is missing
some of the stats of the artifacts it has. I'm know I'm pretty anal, so
it's probably just me, but I think having a list that's wrong is much worse
than having no list.

http://www.sfu.ca/~alaric/unique.htm has a long list of uniques with lots
of info (although you have to click on each item to see it's stats, but
that's no biggie), but the big thing that concerns me is that the list of
shrines on this site is missing some shrines, and some of the data for the
shrines it has is missing. Some of the things mentioned in the Room Items
page makes me think pieces of the site may still have information that's
only appropriate for the demo - which is by FAR my biggest gripe about
diablo pages.

So is there one site that aspires to have (and has succeeded in having!)
the most accurate information? Is there one "best Diablo site"?

Now that all depends. I also have a set of compilations at
http://www.gac.edu/~gkemmetm/diablo.html and yes, we're missing some stuff,
but that depends on what you mean. If you mean by an items existance, we'd
have to include items like the 255 charge arch-angel's staff of apocolypse,
or the gnarled root ring or the demonspike coat ring. We don't include
hacked iems. Have you ever checked out Kingy's Diablo page? He's got tons
of errors, too many to list, but his page is still visited tons of times
daily.

What sets my page apart from others is that I only include items I've
obtained legitamately. Yes, I'm missing a lot of stuff. I don't have down
that Hydra's and Wyrm's stuff exists, and I know they are some of the few
items people look for that are in fact legitimate, but I haven't found one
so it's not on my page.

In case you're wondering why I've chosen to do things this way, is because
of the amount of editing. Sure, a complete list is better than a partial
list. Of course, if I put every rumor on my web page, it'd be 4 times as
long, and I'd feel pretty stupid putting lies on my web page.

If your looking for a really comprehensive Diablo site based only on the
complete and final version of Diablo you might want to try
http://www.monmouth.com/~osmodius/diablo/ which is a site I am constantly
working on and should be adding even more to. It has a thorough list of
all Legitimate Unique Items, Spells, Unique Monsters, Shrines, Fountains,
Potions. Expect updates to include a list of all the item modifiers, list
of normal monsters and their stats for all 3 difficulty settings, and much
more.

I strongly recommend http://www.scorched.com which until recently
would take you straight into a great Diablo site with complete,
accurate lists (or as near as I've seen), hints for newbies and
experts, cool screenshots of mass carnage, quest solutions, and more.

Now it takes you to Scorched Central, an index of four great sites of
which http://diablo.scorched.com is one.

X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter, Unreal, and Jedi Knight are also previewed
here for those of you who have conquered all Diablo has to offer. And
there's some interesting JavaScripts to be found as well.

This site compares favorably to Redwood's Quake Page, IMO.

I don't agree with this logic. Some things can be reasonably verified
without having to force all listings pass the test of "I've found it
personally". In fact, I think the "I've found it personally" test strikes
me as being slightly egotistical - It illegitimizes both reality and
other's experiences in favor of the web page author's.

I agree that listing items that never "naturally occur" would be a bad
thing. But, as a web page 'consumer' I'm not interested in the author's
experiences, only the facts. Eaglehorn for existence, is definitely a real
item in the game. I think the best approach is this: upon someone
reporting a new item or listing, to poll the community for their
experiences and get confirmation of the 'natural occurance' of an item.
You may get some fools who will lie to you in b.net Trading Post, but
Maureen Grady isn't going to steer you wrong in comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.rpg.

I'll end this rant with a reposting of the results of an EXE search I did
near when I first got the game. I think a great deal of what is 'real' can
be inferred by looking at the list. It's presence there, while not proving
anything, should help legitimize it's existence. (Notice the lack of
Diablo Plate.)

PS: Has anyone ever seen The Arch-Litch Malignus??

Disclaimer: This data may not be right. Any strings that were less than 4
characters would be missing. And there's no law that says strings in EXE's
are all next to each other in any logical order.

But what follows is some great info. I won't be making the Diblo Bible.
For one thing it's too much of a juxtoposition on words :), for another
thing, creating the Heroes of Might and Magic II Bible takes up way too
much time, when I should be doing work I get paid for.

Someone else will have to fill in tables/descriptions for what all of these
things mean.

Poking around the EXE yielded this (apparent) list of shrines:

Tainted
Glimmering
Ornate
Secluded
Quiet
Creepy
Abandoned
Spooky
Spiritual
Sacred
Holy
Divine
Eerie
Eldritch
Cryptic
Fascinating
Thaumaturgic
Enchanted
Religious
Stone
Magical
Weird
Gloomy
Hidden
Mysterious

This looks like a list of unique monsters, but some of them sound more like
unique items, so it's hard to say. Who knows how Blizzard stores their
strings, and how their compiler lays them out in the EXE. The list:

Doomlock
Grimspike
Fleshdancer
Webwidow
Bloodlust
Zamphir
The Vizier
Sir Gorash
Steelskull the Hunter
Stareye the Witch
Dreadjudge
Graywar the Slayer
Gorefeast
Witchmoon

Boneripper
Pukerat the Unclean
Soulpus
Bladeskin the Slasher
Bonehead Keenaxe
BlackJade
Red Vex
Arch-Bishop Lazarus
Snotspill
Gharbad the Weak
The Arch-Litch Malignus

OK, here's the list you really were interested in. It looks complete
(although it's not clear to me where the prior list ends), and it looks
like it contains hints as to variations and names based on monster color:

And while we're there, we get a list of basic items. Unfortunately for the
quality of this post, there appears to be some items in here that should
have been in the above "unique items list". Maybe they're here instead of
earlier in the EXE because they are quest items. Oh well. You get what

In case you weren't quite sure they were using PKWARE, It's mentioned four

Gee.. I wonder if they are planning on patenting anything.

Looks like a list of Win32 SDK entry-points/calls. I'm sure that would be
interesting to post - NOT.

OK, that's it.

Maybe - if they were to be in a quest, there certainly were removed.

Hmm, so Lightforge and the Map of the Stars are quest-related items?
Perhaps they are related to the same quest, which doesn't actually occur.

I also notice the absence of the alleged "Rune of the Stars".

Perhaps you are eluding to the rumors that have trickled down to me
about some secret levels, the rune to stars, and map of stars. Though
I have heard that the third required item was some sort of wrap or
cloak. Anyone heard any tidbits on this around battle.net?

What mystifies me the most is that the Map of the Stars is not an enchanted
item. It's name is in white. Also, I've heard from someone who claims to
have spoken with someone at Blizzard (which means this really isn't that
reliable) that the Lightforge does not exist legitamately in multiplayer,
but only in the spawned. That, naturally, doesn't make sense for lots of
reasons.

Either way, secret cow level or not, diablo plate or not, who cares?
There's so many different stories behind each item, has anyone stopped to
think, "hey, maybe NONE of them are true!" I can assure you one way of
gaining levels. Get out of the chatrooms and in to a game.

It's like Mario64, where there's a post on an island with a sign that says
"The owner of this sign is not responsible if people spend hours running
around it."

If you couldn't guess, running around the sign time after time does
nothing. >:)
