Less than two months after the release of Diablo (Diablo was
released to manufacturing on December 27, 1996 and started appearing in
retail stores around 1/2/97) Blizzard has released the first (and
hopefully last) patch. Let's hear it for Blizzard indeed! Let them know
that there are still some people out there who believe in what they are
trying to accomplish. Anyway, I'm off to play on battle.net!

In fact, this comment forces one to ask if you would be willing to state, on the record, that you have NO affiliation with Blizzard or any of its subsidiaries, and have no relatives, friends or any other type of vested interest in the company. The question is necessary because it does not seem possible that a person who was simply a dedicated gamer could make such a comment. The comment sounds like something that would be made by somebody who in some way was having to "pay" for the manpower being spent on patches. The patch is a nice QUICK AND DIRTY fix and I am thankful that Blizzard has released it. But that is all it is. You just can't create a game that is as great as Diablo and leave the glaring flaws that are still there even after this first patch. It would be a crime. Was just playing a game on b.net with two others. We were all at the witch getting mana, etc. and two of us bought infra scrolls to give to the third person. I dropped one, and then the other person dropped the one they just bought. Viola! "Duplicate item detected" and one of the scrolls vanished!!!! Talk about throwing the baby out with the bath water! Then, I found magic armor on two different levels. We were piling everything in town as usual. When I get the second one identified (crystal plate of something), I go throw it in the pile, Viola! "Duplicate item identified" and the first one, from a completely different level of the dungeon vanishes. Now fine, for a quick and dirty fix to a nasty problem (dupping) I'm all for it and can live with it for awhile. But, PLEASE, this is hopefully NOT the last patch.

No - I have no affiliation whatsoever with Blizzard Entertainment.
Neither do any of my family or friends (as far as I know). Why does my
defense of a game company lead you to believe that I work for them?

Yes, if you drop two of the same item then one of them will
disappear. It is part of Blizzards plan to curb duping. You'll be glad
to hear that I feel this is by far the worst part of the patch. It does
not stop duping (people can still do it as long as two items of the same
kind are not on the ground at the same time) and makes life hard for
people like you and me. I guess we will have to be very careful about
what we drop from now on. However, that being said, it is a SMALL price
to pay to rid battle.net net of all the tkers and akers and God only
knows what else was out there. If this patch will put a final end to the
more serious problems with battle.net then I hope it is the last one.

No, it does not occur with scrolls and potions, at least I haven't experienced
that effect so far. I am not sure why this occurs (dup'd scrolls), but I have
bought/found identically named scrolls, dropped them and have later recovered
them successfully post-patch.

Ok, now that we've established that you are not affiliated with Blizzard, could you just please explain (I'm honestly curious) why you hope this is the last patch given that there are still some very glaring problems with the game? It can't be the "hassle" of upgrading because it was hassle free.

Ah yes. I should have paid closer attention. Sorry about that. The
answer is still no, however.

Believe it or not, there are no "glaring" problems with Diablo
and/or battle.net for me. They both have always worked extremely well.
>From reading on this NG and others it seems that quite a few other
people do have problems with them, though. It was shortsighted of me to
say that I hoped this was the final patch. Obviously there are people
out there who are still having problems with compatibility issues,
"bugs", etc. I have it from a good source that you will get the patch
you are looking for in the coming months. Until then have loads of fun
on battle.net! See you around.

Pretty funny, troll. Now go back to your AOL chatroom, d00d.

PS - The next time you venture out of your AOL hole and post on Usenet
be sure not to accuse people of cheating when you have no reason to. If
you had bothered to read even a few of my previous posts you would know
that I am against cheating of any kind on battle.net. Have a nice day.

Oy! That cough medicine is strong stuff. I'm not sure where I got the
impression that you were posting from AOL. At any rate, I apologize for
the AOL comments. I have met some very nice people on AOL. It's the
rotten few that ruin it for everyone else (kinda like battle.net).
Anyway, you get the general idea. Later.

As I stated, the game has always worked perfectly for me. Even
before the patch. It's not that I DIDN'T WANT the game to be patched
again, I simply felt it was unnecessary. Now Maureen Grady was kind
enough to point out the folly in that idea and I do now realize that
just because the game works well for me does not mean it works well for
everyone else (in fact, it seems not to). So in a message I posted a few
days ago I said I would welcome any additional patches Blizzard might
care to offer up. As a matter of fact, you should be getting another
patch pretty soon.

PS - Also, I play Diablo with my father in law quite a bit via the
modem. He does not have Internet access. So with every successive patch
I will have to download it and bring it over to his house and install
it. No big deal really but you could see how a whole slew of patches
might become a pain in the butt. But I say again - if it will rid
battle.net of the cheaters then I don't care! =)

It took very little time to download, was absolutely free, and basically ran itself. If other problems exist, why shouldn't they be dealt with?
