There must be a way around - pull up your automap and scroll the map
(using the arrow keys) - there must be a door or passageway which you
haven't yet explored through.

Good old Gharbad - keep talking to him - eventually something will
happen which will allow you to solve this quest.  (It is a quest, which
you might not already realize - hit "q" to see it listed).  You have to
talk to him 3-4 times.
