And when you unsubbed, you lost the ability to use the sub-only items you'd just found. I'd imagine Blizzard will put more thought into it, but I can't see what they'd offer for Diablo 2, for subscribers - bigger stash ? I can only assume that they're testing the waters for Diablo 3 pay-for-online-play.
