Assassin suggestions?

Any suggestions on how to develop an Assassin? I've now played through the
first act, to level 15; and I'd prefer to know in which direction to
develop her before I end up wasting points on skills that turn out to be
useless later on.

So far I've been using Martial Arts mainly, which works great against
single monsters or small groups (3 charges each of Tiger and Cobra strike
unloaded at once is quite impressive...) but I noticed later on (in the
Monatery) that large groups (4 or 5 up) give me quite some trouble (I ended
up more than once running in panic for my life while hunting for potions in
my backpack cause the belt had run out)

I've ignored traps for now. Was that a mistake? They seem to be the only
thing that allows the assassin to deal with crowds...

Any recommendations?
