Help - Diablo Locking

I just purchased Diablo and it's crashing heavily. The problems
didn't start (noticably) until I got around level 5. The crash seems
to be region specific in the game. I've been in two areas the
continously crashed.

The first one I got around by luring the monsters out of their room
and killing them. Then, I could get in without difficulting.

The second time, game playing techniques wouldn't get around it. I
reinstalled DirectX 3, then the latest Awe32 drivers then the beta
Mill (I was using the latest official release). It seemed to work
until I went down the stairs to level 6. It crashes in progress. The
screen memory is trashed. Prior crashes just knocked me back to W95.

I'm not sure which component is to blame (the trap is in Diablo, but
unfortunatly, it isn't a guarantee that they're the cause).

Basic system info
        P166
        48Meg Ram
        Millenium
        AWE 32 sound card
Latest DirectX 3. (I didn't try the version off the Diablo
CD...maybe I should)
Fails before and after Diablo patch.
