	Answer: You die.  It's happened to me before (tried to switch 
from a bow of the stars to a healing staff, my HP dropped below zero 
and I died).  And once it happened to a guy I was playing with.  He died 
and returned to town, then he apparently tried to switch the items he 
was holding, and he died again.  He got really mad and yelled at me that 
I was a town killer, then left the game.  I never even went near him.
