I had the same thing happen to me on one occasion, and we came up with an
interesting alternative. if you are coming down stairs cast town portal
just as you enter the stairs to go down to where the monsters are
surrounding the stairs, if you do this successfully the portal will open
somewhere random on that level and then you can go down it and draw the
monsters away from the stairs. It really does work and saved me and my
freinds asses.
