ESS Sound card crashes

  Anyone else have an ESS based sound card (most of the cheap 16 bit
cards use the ESS chipset) and have gotten Diablo not to loop the
sound and crash?  I got Diablo a couple days ago and played it on the
PAS16 sound card and 2x cd drive.  Got tired of that and bought a 12X
cd drive and put this ESS 1868 sound card in since the old PAS16 audio
connector isn't compatible with the new ones.  Now it crashes within a
minute of starting it.  Tried everything I could think of and still it
didn't help.  Anyone know how to uninstall Direct X 3.0 so I can try
2.0 again?
