For definition of lamer see above.  The correct responce to the
question is to.... use guardian to test rooms ahead of you,
if they fire into the room it has monsters, if you here grunts then
the monsters are hurt by fire, no grunts better then they hate
lightning,  lure out in small groups or single monsters, use corridors
to line up kills,  have a safe line of retreat and a town portal cast
away from the stairs.... or if worst comes to worst start a new game
to replay the cats or caves to get what you need.
