 I have a computer with sound on the motherboard.

 I can't get Descent 1 to talk to the sound. I'm running it through a command
prompt window. Using Win 98SE. Also same trouble on a different machine using
WinXP.

 I issue the set BLASTER command before starting.

 Any tips?

First thing I would do is get one of the 2 or 3 excellent D1 ports, and not 
try to get D1 itself to work.  The newer ports work with both D1 & D2 as 
well:
