Really old Descent

A) are there any copies of the original Descent (D1?) still lying around?
If so, would anyone like to share? I believe my original copy was on a
512KB floppy, which I must have thrown out...

B) has anyone tried to run D1 on an XP machine? D2 runs fine on my HP
cheapie, but has some issues on my Dell dual-core machine. I'm wondering if
anyone else has worked with these old DOS games.

Did this ng just have a server problem? I was trying to look for old posts
and between yesterday and today, most of the posts (even new spams) have
become "no longer available on this server..."

IIRC even the D1 demo had more KB than this.

There are many copies of D1+D2 on ebay for a few dollars. You still
need the retail disks since they have the artwork and level files. The
actual .exe has been rewritten by the fan base to run on today's machines.
There are more than one of these re-compilation projects.

    http://www.descent2.de/
    http://www.dxx-rebirth.de/main.php

Both should play D1 as well as D2, you can try them both. Dual-core issues
are usually solved by disabling the 2nd core with a utility, or setting the
'cpu affinity' with task manager.

Thanks, I'll try those sites.

On my Dell, the video runs (off the CD) but after the first bot-description
segment, the CD doesn't hand off to the game properly - the screen goes
black and I eventually have to use TaskManager to kill the app. I don't
have this problem on the other older machine. Anyone have a suggestion on
how to tweak this? I have the rest of the game - without videos - installed
on the HD, and didn't have any (obvious) problems with the install...

What I found was quite a few copies of Descent for Playstation - none for
DOS. ( I hadn't realized it had been redone for PS)

You can buy DESCENT CD very cheap.

I bought for $5.00 new brand DESCENT 1 <3

Also got full free DESCENT 1 from PC POWERPLAY MAGAZINES some years ago.
