How can I get fine control of yaw in D2X-XL 1.5.84?

Using a PS/2 keyboard for play.

Tried various ramping settings, but still the smallest incremental yaw
change I can make seems to be about 10-15 degrees by just tapping the
arrow keys.

This sucks for me because I like to sit back and play sniper with the
Gauss on nasty robots.

Any suggestions?

Thanks
Mike

d2x-xl moves too fast to play via the keyboard. However, d2x-rebirth
has the original keyboard speed.

I had investigated into movement and turning speed in Descent 2, and
have tuned D2X-XL to be as close to it as possible. Afaik, D2 turns at
2 secs/360 deg. If I am wrong please correct me - it's a matter of a
minute to change this.

Horizontal turn speed of D2X-XL has been the same as in Descent 2 and
D2X, only vertical turn speed was too, which I have fixed in v1.5.156.

Hmmm.
Maybe it's my keyboard driver or something.

XP says I'm using the standard generic 101-key driver, and it's a
generic IBM keyboard. Maybe I should try to find a custom driver for
it...

FYI - I tried the "zoom" with the Gauss and found that I was able to
turn with much finer control...I guess you had to slow it down when
magnified like that - any chance of having the turn rate
user-adjustable?

And thanks for your work, there are a lot of people who DO appreciate
it.

I tested it as:
2.8 seconds for 1 complete revolution, turning left
25.5 seconds for 10 complete revolutions, turning left

This is now the same in d2x, d2x-rebirth and d2x-xl.

I believe the remaining difference in d2x-xl 1.5.158 for keyboard
control is the "twitchiness" - the movement acceleration in the first
tenth of a second. Tapping the keyboard quickly, results in a smaller
movement with d2x and d2x-rebirth under Linux, making fine control
easier.

I've struggled to find a difference with the "ramping" in d2x-xl. Is it
meant to affect the initial acceleration? If so, that may do the trick,
if its effect is made stronger.

Keyboard ramping decreases the initial acceleration, makes the keyboard
less sensitive for the first second or so. Think of a more or less
concave curve approaching max. sensitivity depending on the strength of
the ramping (greater strength -> slower increase of sensitivity).

Anyway, I have fixed vertical rolling speed with D2X-XL.

Paul,

I have found keyboard ramping not to work properly, and have fixed it
in v1.5.163.

I always used a stick with the twist axis set for yaw, left/right for
bank, fore/aft - pitch. Completely natural, and very precise.
Left hand on keyboard ran thrust, weapons, etc.
