hello gang,

descent II was my favorite. for some reason, D3 just didn't do it for me.
anyway, i'm putting together a system JUST for D2 since it won't run under
WinXP. so far, i've cobbled together a pentium II 400mhz CPU, 384mb of PC133
RAM, an abit BHa6 motherboard, and for graphics i have a canopus spectra
2500 + creative labs 3D Blaster Voodoo2 12MB. not only am i having trouble
finding the right drivers for these last two items, i cannot remember what
else was involved in getting this old 3DFX setup to work. i've been
searching the web and seem to getting more confused all the time. ANY help
on getting my video cards working with D2 appreciated! thanks.

    Yes it will, with D2X.

    http://www.3dfxzone.it/index.php

Now, running a 3dfx card under dos with d2 with a mouse required some
custom settings, as the framerate would be too high. So I used this batch
file to limit framerate to roughly 35fps. I also used one of the dos mouse
drivers that allowed commandline options to increase the mouse sensitivity
so much less movement was required. I've been unsuccessful in relocating
this mouse driver tho.

If you wish to experiment with d2_3dfx and a "glide wrapper" there are a few
of those around, such as Glidos. Google for them.

@echo off

REM Disable splash screen
SET FX_GLIDE_NO_SPLASH=1

REM Proceed at monitor's refresh rate
SET FX_GLIDE_SWAPINTERVAL=2

REM Wait for Vertical Sync
SET SSTV2_SWAP_EN_WAIT_ON_VSYNC=1

REM Set screen refresh rate. Valid settings are: 60, 75, 85 and 120 Hz.
REM WARNING: Be sure not to exceed your monitor's maximum refresh rate!
SET SSTV2_SCREENREFRESH=75

REM Set GAMMA settings as appropriate. May require some experimentation.
REM Valid settings are 0.25 to 1.95.
REM SET SSTV2_GAMMA=x.xx

REM Launch D2_3DFX - include -joypolled if joystick doesn't function
properly.
d2_3dfx.exe -shortpackets -packets 5 -playermessages %1 %2 %3 %4 %5

Also, a better choice for a 3dfx system is a Voodoo3 card, as it has 2D
builtin. These should be nearly free on ebay.

thank you very much for the info! yes, you were right...i got it run under
winXP with D2X. actually, i'm amazed i've even gotten this far actually as
i've always been confused by all the talk of D2X, glidos, glide wrappers,
etc. i'm still working on getting it to run with the voodoo2 setup (thanks
for the tip on voodoo3 but i'm not spending any more money on this). anyway,
the problem i'm encountering now is that it keeps telling me that it cannot
detect a joystick even though my microsoft sidewinder 3D pro is connected to
the game port on my soundblaster live card.

I don't know how a Live card behaves under dos. Likely it needs a dos
driver.
