Descent 2 usb joystick xp - ship wobbles up and down

Yesterday I found my old copy of descent 2 and tried to run it in xp
for a bit of nostalgic gameplay.  I thought I might try and get it
running on my home network.  To my amazement does load and run in XP,
but not without problems.

The ship wobbles up and down all the time, you can hear it repeatedly
bashing on the tunnel floor. It goes forward and back with keyboard
keys and fires ok but I can't stop it shaking up and down.  I thought
this might be the lack of a calibrated joystick and plugged in my usb
gamepad.  But, this does not seem to work very well at all.

Has anyone had this ship wobbling problem and know what it is and has
anyone been able to solve it or run the game properly in xp  or with a
usb gamepad.

Any advice would be much appreciated.
