D2 on Windows 2000

I need some expertise. I have recently gotten myself a new motherboard and
hard drive. I installed windows 2000 as the operating system and now cannot
get D2 to even load. I get as far as install and it tells me that D2 is
meant to run on Windows 95. I have downloaded the compatibility patch but I
can't get far enough to use it. I had D2 on another 2000 box but can't get
it here. What am I doing wrong?

I had the same issue, I just copied the entire D2 directory from my
old machine to my new one via network connection. Worked for me.

Every new machine I've seen in the last few years has LAN ports, so
you could set it up with a crossover cable even if you don't normally
use a LAN.

Or, if you still have the old hard drive, load it as a IDE slave drive
and run it from there.

I'm not quite sure if I understand this right; if you can install it,
just grab D2x (http://www.icculus.org/d2x/) and use that. Works like a
charm.
If it doesn't install, which version of D2 do you have? I believe
there's a lot of versions - especially budget variants or the one from
the "Descent Venture Pack" - that have a directory that contains all
files you'll need for D2. Check if you have one of those versions. If
you do, just copy them over and use D2x then. ;)
Otherwise, see if you can get it to install with DOSbox
(http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/).

Well , I don't know what to say . I didn't know what version of D2 I had so
I looked at the disk and cover it came in ( I have several ) and maybe this
isn't the same disk I had been trying but it installed just the way it was
supposed to .
I was asked during installation how much I wanted to keep on disc and how
much to put in the hard drive . I picked crazy because I have the room. Is
there one level that is better than another? I guess when 1 gig HDs were
cutting edge that was more of a concern. It said that the play would be
better if I put more of it on my HD. Is this true?
I am very happy to have D2 back on my system.

Sort of. The two highest levels, as far as I know, only differ in
"Crazy" having the movies installed to the hard disk as well. That is,
the level below "Crazy" probably won't make much of a difference. The
lower levels leave more data on the CD, which will consequently have to
be loaded off the CD at the start of the level. In short, play itself
won't change much, but the loading times will. Even then though, with
nowadays' CD drives, that won't make much of a difference. The main
advantage of the "Crazy" install is that you can use a no-CD crack or
D2x and play without the CD. :)

Bye,

Florian

Mark, I can use D2 (with win2k) by installing the D2 Win95 "upgrade", then
running the game in the "win95 compatibility layer". This may help:
