D3 still crashishes on loading....

Thanks for the tip on disabling the intro movie; that allowed me to get
to the control config, etc.

After loading my joystick (Wingman Attack 2) and setting other misc
controls (name of pilot, etc.) I hit the 'New game' button.

A screen came up with something like 'Acropolis Mars station', and it
now hangs up there. Tried it three times; same problem...

I downloaded the DirectGL drivers, but all the warnings about it being a
beta version, and could permanently damage my OS (Win 98 V2) I decided
not to take that chance; I'm not real good at fixing minor problems with
games, much less major OS problems.

I did look up my video card; it's an Asus Ti 4200 8X, 128 megs of video
RAM, with TV out and DVI (what is DVI? I tried to read the video card
manual; I got about 2 pages into it before my brain exploded.....)

I'm reasonably computer literate, but this computer was custom built for
me by a friend, and I know little about it. Except at the time(Jan 2003)
the video card was supposed to be one of the best for gaming. The
motherboard is an Asus as well, and it has 512 megs of RAM. It is far,
far, far faster than my Dell 2.3 gHz P4 computer at work.

But I want to play Descent 3!

I read all of the FAQ's on Moon's site (which did tell me how to disable
the intro.; thanks for that tip) but I didn't see anything else that
looked promising. Most of it dealt with specific hardware issues, and my
hardware is several generations past when this game came out; it
*should* run like a race horse!

I bought D3 several years ago, but couldn't get it to play on my Win 95
233PII system. I was vastly disappointed, of course.

I haven't had time for any gaming until recently, and remembered my D3
game, which I never got to play when I bought it :-(
and I got all fired up to play it; I loved D1 and D2, of course.

Descent 2 has been my all time favorite game I've ever played! (Beating
out Quake I &II, Unreal, Halflife, etc.) I'm hoping D3 is as good or
better!

Any other tips or ideas? TIA.

DVI stands for Digital Video In. Not sure what it does but who cares
for now.

As for D3, what you may be having problems with is your sound
conflicting with your video.

enter this next set of text in the D3 setup in the MISC tab command
line area.

-nosound -nomusic

after the -nointro youhave in there already

Try like this. If it works, then I'd suggest physically moving your
sound card to another PCI slot (brown) and rebooting.
