new XP laptop is too fast for D2?

Just got a 2 GHz XP laptop, copied all my old D2 files to it as I've
always done when moving to a new machine (has worked for 98, ME, 2K
Pro) but on this machine when D2 comes up it has some strange
symptoms.

"boucing" in idle is a roller coaster
pitch and yaw axis are waaaaaay slow
roll axis is normal
Forward/reverse thrust is about twice as fast as normal
weapons cycle much faster

I know I've seen info on these symptoms before, I've been Googling for
about 45 minutes and haven't found the magic combination.

I'd appreciate any leads or tips on this!

TIA
Mike

And you didn't come across the d2x project that takes care of the
Descent2 source since it was made open source? ;-)

http://www.icculus.org/d2x/

There you can actually limit the fps so that the games is playable again.

P.S.: Also search on groups.google.com next time :)

Thanks for the tip, Thomas.

The reason I asked the question here is because I hoped someone (like
you) would know that FPS is what I need to be looking at. You did. I
didn't, until now. Thanks.

However, I googled on "CPU speed", "Descent", "problem" in the groups.
Saw a bunch of stuff on D3, but not THIS problem on D2.

The site you so kindly pointed me to does not mention this problem in
any way that I can find, either. Maybe I'm just a bonehead and missed
it? At any rate, I'll work on the FPS thing now that you've pointed me
in the right direction.

Thanks again, oh reluctant savior!

This should a a good command line to start D2X (it is the one I use):

d2x-gl.exe -gl_intensity4_ok 0 -gl_mipmap -gl_reticle
1 -automap_gameres -fullscreen -maxfps 35
