After studying the IPX in Descent for a while we've come to the conclusion that the authors inserted the bullshit about "should be on the same network" because they were unable to code their drivers to work over routers. The IPX code in descent does NOT negotiate IPX network numbers and as such is unable to work further than your local LAN or it's transparently bridged neighbors. The authors should really take a look at Proving Grounds' implementation of IPX which works smoothly over multiple WAN links. Unfortunately the address "sup...@interplay.com" has not answered my mail I sent days ago. Good game but not so good networking code. I noticed the same thing. Their comment is very misleading.
