I don't know what YOU did, but I found them easily. First of all, the
address is : http://www.primenet.com/~jbailey . It looks like you
missed something at the end there..... Then, it asks you if you want to
see the list of games.... I don't know where the crap is, but the
games certainly aren't buried under it. Maybe you should check what
you're doing before you start YELLING all the time (BTW, check your
stupid CAPS LOCK before waste your time...)

I have to agree. I did it a little different, (searched for his name in the
User pages. Gasp!) but found it no problem.

BTW: The Magic Carpet demo makes me rethink my plan not to buy a CD-Rom
drive....Wow....

I think I know what your problem is. For some reason, the file that
installs the game into its prospective directories isn't included in the
main zip. I had the same problem, but went back and d.l.ed the install
file (Dunno what it was called) and unzipped it again and all was o.k.
Just check the place where you got it before and see if there is anything
else there pertaining to Magic Carpet.

Is there some sort of password you have to have?

Betcha they use a hierarchical zip (with subdirectories). Try
   pkunzip -d <zipfile>
and see if it works better.

Yeah, there is supposed to be another directory created when you install

Nope, sometimes User Anonymous denied is also given when the number of
allowed anonymous users is exceeded. What site was it, I seen to have missed

Ahh. But you see if you get the zip file from a web site (which I
did) you don't get the *.bat file which unzips it for you. So
I just unzipped it. Without the -d switch. And, surprise surprise,
it didn't work.

Well, the web site that was being discussed was:

http://www.primenet.com/~jbailey/

Here is some of the text from the Magic Carpet page:

Be sure to type pkunzip -d when you expand the file carpet.zip.

Bill, you're problem is most likely with your Sound Blaster,
if you have one. Otherwise, it's with your memory configura-
tion. Magic Carpet doesn't give you errors, it just bombs
your system (real nice of them).

Try freeing up as much memory and starting without the sound
blaster and see if it works. Hope this helps.

Magic Carpet runs under DOS4GW, hence freeing up memory isn't a problem.
In fact, running w/out EMM386 is recommended... just allow the necessary
drivers to load low then run the game. I have a multi-config'ed bootup
and when I select my MC option, I have 486K free w/all my XMS untouched.
I've never had a crash w/this setup.
BTW, the above is true for any game that uses the DOS extender.

The original poster's problem is certainly unzipping w/out -d.

In my newsreader hit F instead of f (shift it or put caps lock on) and
that does a followup and insterts the current article into your fresh one.

ass. (Especially Doom's. It's just a shame that I don't know anyone with a

Try again, it worked OK for me. (I got it off a mag CD). I just can't
figure out what to do in this game, though. The gfx are impressive,
and flying's fun, but I can't see how to complete the level.

Firing spell 2 at balls makes them colored, but why?

Good suggestion, but the demo comes with absolutely *no* instructions. I
haven't dumped the demo yet, becuase I like the graphics, so I'm hoping that
if I keep flailing away, I'll be able to figure out out to play. But some
kind of README certainly would have been nice.

Indeed. But that was the aspect that kept me playing. Bullfrog puroductions
have by tradition gave sod-all information on how to play their games.
Their's is a "try it and see" approach which is much better in my opinion
that everything being handed to you on a plate.

Instead of flailing around getting frustrated, try little experiments.
If it's any consolation the full game dosn't tell you anything either.

Uhhhh, anyone know where to get the working shareware version of Dark
Forces? I've gotten it off a WWW site, but I'm missing a file or two.
It just doesn't work. Anyone know where I can get it?

I've had it crash twice in the middle of playing it - I wasn't doing anything
funny. This was the demo version. BTW, can anyone get the save game feature to
work with the demo. I click on the "to disk" icon, then click on a book, then
click on the tick in the dialog, but it doesn't do anything. No files are
written. Might this be because I'm running it from D:\CARPET? I see it's made
a directory called C:\CARPET.CD and this has a subdirectory called SAVE.

I agree that the game is impossible to understand intuitively, and the demo
comes with _no_ documentation. But there is a helpful faq somewhere - the
Games Domain has a pointer to it. It's definitely worth persisting...

Just got registered dark forces running. So where the multi-player modem
& network options? I guess the rebel fleet is not supposed to be fighting
themselves. What do they put in all of that space they use in the .GOB files
the dang thing zips to 31megs.

| Okay, okay.
|
| Want to know what you're supposed to /DO/ in Magic Carpet?
|
| *) Fire your 'castle' spell at a likely looking piece of ground
| *) Fly around and kill absolutely everything that's remotely unfriendly.
| *) They'll drop spheres when they die
| *) Use the spell that changes the spheres' colour
| *) The balloon that you get with the castle will come and pick them up
| when you change their colour
| *) You're competing for these spheres with other dudes on carpets, who'll
| come change your-coloured spheres to ones which are their colour, then
| /their/ balloon will come pick up the spheres. But you can always change
| the sphere colour back again or destroy their balloon.
| *) Spheres are good. Keep marking as many as you can.
| *) There are at least two more spells in the demo. A lightning bolt spell,
| in that enclosed area full of wasps, and a sort of a turbo-boost spell
| in some village.
| *) Keep your eye on the power-meter for the castle spell. When you get one
| or more white pixels in the power bar, it means you can go beef up your
| castle. Do this by firing the castle spell at your own castle. Each
| successive time you do this, you get a cooler castle, with more towers,
| archers, walkways, etc.
| *) There's a transporation sphere amidst a ring of stones, I think it's
| sort of north from the starting position. It'll take you to the
| tall enclosed area which is full of wasps.
| *) F1 for help.
|
| Hope this helps someone.

You must colour the balls to create manga, you need to find the castle spell
and cast it. This creates a castle which will send out a big ballon which
will pick up all the blue colured balls givinh you more power (this is also
the whloe point of the game !!!! i.e. to collect x number of balls)

It does the same thing for me. I called tech support at carpet and he said it
was because I didn't have the netbios loaded, sounds funny to me. I'm full
blown set on getting it to run over the network so it you find anything out
please let me know.
