: If I spend $165 for the additional memory, I believe it would run

: need? I thought the 25 Mhz had something more to do with it. :/ Any
: 486, 8meg players out there who can give me some advice?

It will sure run faster with +4 megs, but i'd prefer more efficient
processor. For about $10 you can find a new oscillator running at 33 MHz,
iNTEL's 486sx/25 is easily ran at 33 MHz. On your main board may be
DIP-switches or jumpers choosing the clock-rate of your computer (MHz) - If
so, change it to 33 MHz..Otherwise, Look at your mainboard for an
oscillator, It should be 1 * 2 cm metalbox with text: 25.000 MHz or
something like that. Cut it off. You don't have to melt tin or anything..
Just go to nearest radiocomponent store and ask for oscillators.. and those
white plastic binders - I don't know the word in English.. but anyway. It's
easy! You can't break anything.. Or you differ from us.

Another way to get more speed to your system is buying a new
mainboard or a videoboard. If your mainboard has only 8- or 16-bit ISA
slots, it's DOOMed to be slow. If it has VLB or even PCI slots, find a Tseng
or S3 videoboard with less than $200, and you will have a very fast dos
system, Descent will run smoothly.

If it's not a question of money, then sell your system and buy a new
one: Gamer's Choice is here:

	Pentium 90 MHz
	S3 864 PCI Video adaptor
	8 Megs of RAM
	Gravis Ultrasound (MAX) Sound board

With those: You can't find a game not running smoothly nowadays.. (Well, I
haven't seen ORIGIN's games with that system, but.. ;)

I heard you could get better play by upping your clock speed on your computer.
I think the guy who said this was bullshitting. He said all you have to do
is switch a jumper setting on the motherboard.

I would've thought so myself... I got one for xmas, and find that NASCAR is
choppy when all graphic details are turned on in SVGA mode. It's playable, but
not ideal. This machine gets 71.4 on 3dbench. It's not an indictment of
NASCAR, which I play more than any other game on the system, but
I'm disappointed in not seeing a magnitude of improvement over my old DX2-66
(playing NASCAR). Doom on the new system, OTOH, is now so smooth, there is no
frame rate that would be meaningful, even if measurable. Just be careful of
sweeping generalities...

Mike.

Bumping the clock speed does work, however you can toast your CPU.
Becareful if you decide to do this. I for one have a Cyrix 486DX57,
evidently my MB manufacturer let that clock go a bit high. I seem to
remember someone saying Intel rates CPU 10% below what it could run at,
to cover for production variations. Hope this helps.

I agree with that! The SB16/SCD-15 DB combo is quite a formidable setup.
Even Dark Forces works (well, on my system at least) even though the
README says it doesn't support it. The only game that fights once in a
while is ROTT. The game runs slowly once in a while, even the setup program,
if I turn on SB16 & SCD-15. Weird.

Well, add 16MB ram. I have 16 on my DX33 with ISA gfx, and it can run
as fast as a DX266 VLB gfx with 8MB of ram.
