Since others are posting suggestions, how about this---if you shoot the door to a
hostage cell but have to leave before picking them up, how about letting the
hostages start to work their way through the mine instead of just staying put?
You'd have to use the map to find them, of course, but it would add an element
of human-like uncertainty to things, instead of just having them stand in one spot
flapping their arms forever...

8-)

Yeah, but if you, say on level 1 of D2, manage to blow the hostage door
but not the gates in the rest of the room, the hostages has to walk
across a long lava-pit to get to the rest of the mine - not all that
easy! :)

Besides, where should they go?

- Towards the reactor? - How should they know where it is?
- Towards you? - Same problem!

Nah, I vote for letting them stay put, perhaps with a bit more animation
so they react when they see you and start waving as they do now. Before
that they should sit and sulk or something like that... :)

Oh, and how is it that the hostages are clearly visible even in a dark
room? - Glow-in-the-dark spacesuits? - No, they should only be visible
by reflected light from the lights in the mine, the flares or your
headlights.

"Besides, where should they go? "

Towards the exit, natch. 8-) The hostages must be human miners left
behind---surely they'd know the way out.
