Here's my warning: be very careful with the provided modem initialization strings -- the ones provided messed up my USR 28.8 really well -- even after turning it off and on again! I had to pull out the manual and go through all the factory modem init codes which I assume restored the NVRam settings. I noticed the problem when I went back to connect to my Internet Provider -- I dialed in fine, but I wasn't able to bring up anything -- mail, news, browser, etc... Even the Sysop couldn't "ping" me. I reinstalled MacTCP and tried everything but the above before managing to reconnect, which I did after about 3 hours of fiddling. I'm not entirely sure yet whether NetLink works with 7.5.2 which doesn't have a "Network" control panel. As far as I can see, use the AppleTalk control panel instead, but a warning here too -- the control panel bombed twice when I tried to enact NetLink. +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Bruce Payan -- Kallion Computing Services <kal...@wimsey.com> | +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+

For a US Robotics 28.8, try AT&F1&H1&B1&A3&D0 if you want error correction and data compression. This might also be used for a PPP connection. It's too bad that there is no consistant standard with modem strings. As for system 7.5.2. It should work, but OT is a bit buggy. Make sure you have the most up-to-date version of OT. I tried a million times yesterday with my friend who had a global village teleport gold II he just used the basic hayes compatible and I used the init for my supra that I found in macppp. Never worked but once(out of about 50 times). I finally ended up connecting my 14.4 global village and he called me. Right after he connected to me it says the modems couldn't establish a connection when we were connected. I called him and it worked(with the basic hayes init) but everytime we ran in marathon 2(demo)it just froze and we had to quit marathon 2 demo and gather again. But if we walked in Mara2 it worked perfectly(sorta, still froze a bunch like that). Can you tell us if in the next release will these bugs be fixed: Recognizing carrier better, actually dialing when it says dialing, keeping carrier after connecting(usually hangs up right after connecting), being able to run in Marathon, better looking for a modem, actually connecting and making that stupid connecting message go away after connection(Usually get connected and it just sits there and won't let us do anything)?
