Descent, Gravis Ultrasound, and random lockups!!!

I have all three of these!! Yet I haven't seen the many "X" doesn't work with
my GUS posts that I see for other games.

Am I the only one (actually there is another person with this problem) that is
experiencing total system lockups while using a GUS soundcard??

I've tried it with and without SMARTDRV and memory managers, and with the IRQ
set to 11 AND 7, DMA at 1, and Address at 220. These cofigurations are
working flawlessly for me in DOOM II, WCIII, Tie Fighter, and Hardball 4, as
well as several Shareware games, including Heretic.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!

If you have more than 512K on your GUS card, try
editing your descentg.ini file and changing (on the 3rd and
4th lines) the 44's to 22's.

Let me know if this works.

Have you tried running from a clean boot (by hitting F5 during a reboot)?
No sound drivers are needed for Descent's GUS support... it should run
fine from a clean boot like this. Also try running with the "-verbose"
option and see exactly where it locks up.

Both myself and a friend of mine, with similar setups (Intel Plato p5-90
motherboard) and GUS's have no problems. Runs GREAT, the sound is as good
as Doom. I don't know about his setup, but here's mine.. Base 240 (his is
220, I think), DMAs 5 and 5, IRQ 7, Midi IRQ 5. I have revision 3.4 of the
card, and software version 3.57. I have 1 meg of ram on it. For memory, I
sometimes use EMM386 (dos 6.2), sometimes QEMM v7.04. Seems to work fine
with either. Oh yeah, I almost always use Norton's NCACHE2 (from version 7
of the Norton Utils, I think).

Hope you can get it working, you're missing out..when do the lockups happen?

When I try to run Descent from a clean boot, it can't find the soundcard. As
a minimum, I need to set the environment variables (ULTRASND and ULTRADIR) and
run "ultrinit", as far as I've been able to see.

Someone wrote me via email and said that someone from Parallax told them that
their was a known bug in 1.0 that would be fixed in 1.1 for GUS and some
other soundcards that caused this lockup. Is this true??

My lockups begin right away, after selecting the player file, and then
choosing new game. Sometimes I will see the initial screen, sometimes it
locks in the blank screen between graphical screens. I always know that it
has locked up because the music goes to a single, unending note :-) !!

How did you come about choosing your Base address, DMAs and IRQ?? I've had
great luck using the standard numbers, with the exception of DOOMs IRQ 7 or
less requirement.

I wish I knew more about the relevance of these parameters, but I don't!

Thanks,

I have tried everything to get this program to play right.. If I select '
Gravis Ultrasound Max' (I have a MAX) for the Digital FX, and *NO* music
card, the game runs FLAWLESSLY (but with *NO* music.). When I select
'Gravis Ultrasound' (No 'Max' for music options!? eh??) for music, the game
will run fine for about 5 mins then just randomly lock up on me. Ive tried
different base ports, DMA's, IRQ's, etc.. NOTHING stops the lock ups on
my MAX when I select 'Gravis Ultrasound' for the music.

Im assuming its a bug in the program itself for Max owners and the music
device you have to select. Every other program works just fine
out there.

I can live without music, but its DAMN good music from what ive heard of
it so far. <cry>

Again, Gravis with Sound FX and NO music = OK
Gravis with Sound FX and music = Random Hangups

I still dunno why it doesnt say 'Gravis Ultrasound Max' for a music
selection, while the Digital FX does have it.. HMMN.

Any further hacks or helps would be appreciated!

Someone mailed me that the GUS Max (and GUS?) have to have a 8Mhz bus speed
or something. Mines in a Vesa slot at the moment, mainly because its too
large to fit into any of my ISA slots. Might this be the reason im having
lockup problems when I turn on the music? This also now happens in Doom as
well. Maybe ill just email GUS tech support and see if they can help out.

No, it's not in a VESA slot, because it's an ISA card. I noticed that I don't
get sound effects from my GUS if the bus speed is above 8MHz. It is a
software problem, not a GUS problem that some games fail at this while others
don't mind if the bus speed is 16MHz or more.

Sounds pretty harsh...you mentioned that Parallax had found a bug in the
game; let's hope this is the one you found. It COULD be an interrupt or
DMA problem, but then so can almost anything. You might try messing with
your settings, if you haven't.

: How did you come about choosing your Base address, DMAs and IRQ?? I've had
: great luck using the standard numbers, with the exception of DOOMs IRQ 7 or

Well, I basically found what worked. I have (normally) a thunderboard
(cheap clone of the original soundblaster), which must be at IO base 220.
Normally, I don't use my Midi IRQ for soundblaster stuff, so I set it nice
and high to get it out of the way - like 12 or 13. However, SBOS won't like
this, and neither will most games, since the SB couldn't do this. Right now
I DO use SBOS, so that's why. DMAs greater than 4 are better because
they're 32-bit (I THINK - I can't seem to remember if this is right, or if
it was 16. Anyone?), whereas 1-4 are lower. This translates into a
slightly faster loading of patches. Anyway, with these constraints (and
other IRQ's ruled out, like 3 and 4 from COM ports, 6 from something, I
forget wha\t exactly), I experimented until what I had worked with as much
as possible.

Also, 7 and 5 are typical sound card IRQ's, being the printer ports (7 is
used by LPT1, 5 by LPT2. The rationale is that you will almost never want
to use your soundcard and printer at the same time. This doesn't really
hold..but hell, I don't even have a printer, so....in any event, 5 is
usually safer than 7.

Bear in mind that GUS MAX's are totally compatible with the original
ultrasounds. The only differences are the built-in 16-bit digital recording
feature, CD-ROM interfaces, the presence of hardware sound compression (I
THINK that the GUS has a very limited form), and the fact that the Max comes
with 512k of onboard ram.

Me, I'd wonder why it has an entry for max at all under digital..makes me
wonder i there's a feature I don't lknow about..

Assuming you've tried clean boots, I have no idea what the problem is. You
MIGHT try upgrading your software, but then a)I sincerely doubt this would
fix any problems, since the game doesn't use Gravis drivers - just the
patches, and b)You have a Max, which means that your drivers are (probably)
quite recent anyway. So....let's hope they can find or have found the bug.

Actually, you CAN plug ISA cards into VESA slots. I don't know HOW this
affects the bus speed, though. I DO know that it works. In situations like
this, the only thing you CAN do is just mess with it and see what
works...try reducing your bus speed, ytry moving it...whatever.

No, it's physically impossible. An ISA card doesn't have the connector that
goes into the VESA part of the slot. The ISA-connector part of a VESA slot
is just an ordinary ISA slot.

The CS4231 codec the MAX has also includes a DAC, which is used for digital
FX. The new Maxsbos uses it as well.

You're both right. Anssi seems to take the first poster here
literally, believing that person to actually mean plugging an ISA card
into the VESA connector, which of course, is physically impossible.
However, the VLB slot does support ISA cards. In this respect, ISA cards
do work in VLB slots, which the first poster stated.

Don't you just love disagreements over word choice?

  You need some environment variables:
  ULTRASND, ULTRA16, ULTRADIR, BLASTER

These all should get set up automatically by your
  GUS installation software.

There is a difference between the Max and the GUS for
digital sound, but not for music, hence the setup choices.
The MAX works more like a Microsoft Sound System.

Here is what my autoexec has:
set ULTRASND=220,1,1,11,5
set ULTRA16=32c,0,0,1,0
set ULTRADIR=C:\ULTRASND
set BLASTER =A220 I5 D1 T1
C:\ULTRASND\ULTRAINIT.EXE -ej

This appeared to be the problem I was having. Although I tried every
combination of IRQs, I never bothered changing the DMA from 1. I tried
setting both GUS DMAs to 5 (after getting some good advice from a fellow
"Curtis"), and it hasn't locked up yet. (Actually, it rebooted itself one time
when I hit the TAB key, but I don't know what caused that!)

Could anyone out there verify that using higher DMA channels provides better
performance?? Should I change my standard DMA channel settings to higher
values?? This and other questions......

They are 16 bit. My SB16 has two DMA addresses - a low DMA, for 8 bit sound
(normally 1), and a high DMA for 16bit sound (normally 5). So DMAs below
5 are 8 bit, above are 16.
