Howdy, I'm looking for information on how to optimize the performance of the demo version of Descent. My system is a 486DX4/100 (Intel) machine based on the ASUS 486SP3G PCI motherboard. Up until recently the demo version of Descent ran very smoothly and quickly. The other day, a Toshia XM-3601B SCSI-2 CD ROM drive was installed, along with the drivers for the motherboard's built-in NCR 53C810 SCSI controller. Since this time, Descent has performed poorly compared to how it ran before. Everything seems just barely perceptibly slower, but the main problem is that the game occasionally lurches in a way that it didn't originally do. The lurches seem most likely to occur during big battles or when enemy shot sound effects start. They also occur once in a while while flying down empty corridors. None of this behavior was present before the CD ROM drive was put in; I've tried making a crude boot disk that does the absolute bare minimum, but the problems persist. It seems puzzling to me that the CD ROM drive's presence should cause this. It also seems like it should be possible to get back the original smooth performance. If anybody has a similar system, and/or some tips on how to improve the performance of Descent, please drop me a note. I'm not at all averse to the idea of making up a special boot disk for Descent. If someone could let me know what sort of entries in CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT make for the best results with Descent (preferably on hardware similar to mine) I'd appreciate it. I'll post a summary of whatever I get if there's sufficient interest. I was nearly done with the demo and was considering getting the full version. But the sudden onset of these yucky performance glitches has made me a bit concerned... -- Jerry Kuch EMail: gdk...@mercator.math.uwaterloo.ca, NeXTMail welcome. IMPORTANT NEWS: Scripts for "Godzilla Vs. Desutoroia" had envisaged the monster's main target as the 1996 World City Expo in Tokyo but the idea fell through when Gov. Yukio Aoshima cancelled the event.

Jerry, I haven't tried this myself, but you may want to go to the bottom of Bare Minimum, and see if it'll run without Himem.sys, and Emm386.sys. It depends on the game, but DOS4GW games are capable of running without these. I would also reinstall the demo if you can. Just try and get the most XMS memory that you can. Matt ThrustMaster, Inc.

Jerry: It could be possible that the problem is the ammount of base memory you are using. Try to make an optimization of memory (maybe with memmaker) to leave more room for the base program to run. You can start putting a disk with dos and the files config.sys and autoexec.bat with the following lines. CONFIG.sys device = c:\dos\himem.sys devicehigh = c:\dos\emm386.exe noems dos=high, umb devicehigh=<your sound device, if any> AUTOEXEC.bat c:\<path>\mouse.com <more sound drivers> Note: Change the <> comments with your drivers that are loading when you boot up your machine. You can also check the ammount of free base memory that you have via mem.exe, i have at least 500 kBytes free and it works pretty well. If you plan to adquire the registered version, go ahead, i have it and its real impressive.
