I'm confused. I have been trying out the shareware version of Descent
and a group of us are now interested in each purchasing the registered
version to play on our LAN at work. I discovered it (I assumed) in CD
version at my local store.

First, based on posts I only grabbed the tail end of, I get the
impression that this CD I found may not actually be the registered
version but rather some sort of upgrade to it.

Second, if this is the registered version, can it be installed to disk
or does it have to be run from the CD. We only have access to one CD
player at work so would not all be able to play if we couldn't install
it.

Can anyone clarify?

The regsitered version of Descent is available on both floppy and CD.
There is no different between the two except for the media.

You cannot play of CD. It needs to be fully installed to your hard drive.

The CD version is the registered version. It installs to disk and doesn't need to be
run from CD.
