Installed an AMD DX40 into an NEC Image 466 (Intel) system and can't get much to run... It has enhanced IDE and TSENG w32 video integrated onto the motherboard and a 256K sram module, GUS, 3C509 nic, and 14.4 modem. Norton and Checkit Pro are happy and recognize 486DX-100, sysinfo and 3DBench show appreciable increase to 189.1 and 62.5 from 141.7 and 50.0 respectively. Everything works and tests fine until I try to run smartdrv or WFW 3.11, the system locks solid requiring a cold reboot. Some programs like Second Reality and edit.com work fine, though. Even worse, DooM, Descent, and Heretic all give a "DOS/4GW Prof. fatal error (1012): C:\DIR\PROGNAME.EXE is not a WATCOM program" error message and dump to the DOS prompt without locking, with or without himem, emm386, etc. None ever get to the familiar DOS/4GW status bar on the top of the screen. The whole reason for the cpu swap was for network Descent. :( I have tried the following without any different results: Disabled any/all performance type things in the bios. Installed nothing but 70ns dram (only req 80ns @ 66Mhz). Removed secondary sram cache. Yanked the GUS, 3C509, and modem. I gather that some motherboards may not accept AMD cpus, and it wouldn't surprise me that the NEC Image boards don't... I will try the AMD in an older pc-clone VLB mb with AMI bios that accepts AMD DX2's later on just to see the results, but it really belongs in the faster NEC. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

The motherboard only documents supporting AMD 386 chips, not 486s. Maybe just ground/pull up a pin on the AMD (wicked hope)? I can trade this chip back in for an Intel, but why pay the extra $? Thanks!
