I downloaded several demos but when I run them it says "demo from a
different version" and won't run. Can I fix this? I know in doom you
can change a hex value corresponding to the the version.

You are not able to play demo versions recorded on the shareware verion
with the registered version and vice versa due to differing demo formats.
I believe this is the error you are seeing.
