Descent v1.2 BUG?

Descent gamers,
  I'm having a problem with v1.2 Shareware. I can't get a modem game
started. I have a USRobotics 28.8 external. If you have one, and have
no problems, please share. The person I'm calling has a cheap 9600 baud
modem (came in the Packard Bell 11CD from Best Buys, for those playing at
home). The bugs? Well, on my machine, I can change the radio button
selections for my baud rate, and com port on the "Com Settings" dialog
once I've made one change - that is whatever I first set it to, that's
it. Fortunetly, the default settings when I install seem to be what I
want, so I just reinstalled, and it worked better. HOWEVER!!!! When I
called my friend, she was able to connect just fine, but I get an error
saying that I must connect at or above 9600 baud inorder to play Descent.
This is very frustrating, since I have the radio button set to 19200
baud. Thinking that perhaps the "ATZ" default modem init string wans't
enough, I tried "AT &F &N6". The &F reset the modem to factory settings,
and &N6 forced a 9600 baud connection or it hangs up. It always hangs
up, which tells me that for some reason I'm not connecting at 9600 or
greater. I've sent a note to Tech support, but it's Sunday, here in
Indianpolis, IN. If you know how to fix my problem, or want further
information and you think you can help, please email me ASAP!!! I'm at
dbot...@iquest.net.
Thank you for reading...

Sincerely,

This error message is generated if the modem gives a connect message with
a baud rate less than 9600. So apparently your modem returned a string
of "CONNECT 2400" or somesuch. Setting the DTE rate in Descent does not
affect the connect rate, only the maximum connect rate. I'd suggest
loading a terminal program, using the same init string EXACTLY, and
call your friend. Then see what the connect message is.

It is possible that the USR is returning a more verbose string than
Descent can parse, but I doubt it. Descent has no problem dealing with
connect strings like CONNECT 9600/ARQ/LAP-M etc.. I suspect the problem
is either a bad phone line or your friends modem not negotiating a good
rate with your modem.
