correction. wolfenstein's source was released to the public, not the
public domain. there's a difference. just because the source is free
for viewing, that doesnt mean the compiled, retail version is "free"
as well, nor does it mean that you can the use the source to create
your own version of the game and claim rights to it. if you were to
simply read the txt file on id software's ftp, you'd see that
downloading the wolf3d source binds you to a license agreement. as far
as legal matters are concerned, the only difference between the wolf3d
game and wolf3d source is that the source is free of charge. wolf3d
remains a copyright/trademark/etc. of id software, and therefore, by
definition cannot be public domain. and while we're on this topic, all
of those eagerly awaiting the doom source so that you can create some
funky version of your own, dont expect to be able to distribute your
works. id *might* allow it, but chances are they wont, and any
distribution of modifications will prolly have to be done by a
patching utility similar to version patches.
