Yes. You missed :
- D2 is a DOS game. Doesn't do hardware acceleration. (except some voodoo cards,
  dunno if it works on a V3) You're probably using software rendering in some
  high resolution, which is slow.
- D2 does not support USB joysticks. They did not exist when D2 came out.
  D2 simply does not know how to talk to the joystick.

The Win95 version may help you with your joystick problem.
