if it is sound related there is an easy way to test it.

start the game using the -nosound command line.
(when you start d3, click SETUP rather than PLAY
and in the MISC tab near the bottom is the command
line args. Simply add it there    -nosound)

Then run the game and see if the crashes happen or not.

If the still happen, it is not the sound, if they don't happen
it is sound related.
