On that note, one idea I had is a variation of "capture the flag",
where teams of people race through a level grabbing items, and
whoever makes it out of the level FIRST and/or with the most items
wins the level -- OR -- whoever has the most keys INTACT at the
end of some time limit wins.

In team play, this could be interesting if you have one player go for
the goods while their team-mates fight off the other team's players,
who has someone going for the goods as well.

And instead of winding up at a random point when you die, everybody
goes back to the common starting point and has to make it back to
wherever the current match-up is happening. Of course, in the race
to get back, there's bound to be confrontations between players of
opposite sides.....

If one is killed, any key/item they might be holding goes back to
it's source spot for someone to grab again. This is a big incentive
for blowing your opposition away if you're short items/points before
time runs out.

There's lots of possible tactics which could be applied to a scenario
like this in team play.
