It figures. He sent this exact same message to me in e-mail.
(follow=post to newsgroup reply=send e-mail)
At least he figured out his mistake and posted.
:) It happens to the best of us.
for Capture the flag:
>>> Es...@voyager.cris.com (SWAN) says:
>>>- Perhaps a 'capture the flag' type option for multiplayer? Say one ship,
>>>equipped with permanent invincibility, has to guard the reactor from other
>>>players. They get three tries to nail it, and if they don't the defender
>>>gets the point. If they do kill the reactor, the defender loses a point.
>>>The defender/assaulter positions rotate so that everyone has a chance to
>>>attack and a chance to defend (in 2 players, they'd switch back and forth).
>>> Am I confusing anybody yet? :-)
or
>> Pa...@po.cwru.edu (Pete) says:
>> What you could do is have a red card and a blue card.
>> The red team guards the red card.
>> The blue team guards the blue card.
>> The red team needs to get the blue card and bring it back to its own
>> base and go through a blue door behind the red card pedestal.
>> Or the door could be anywhere.
>> The blue card would be missing from the blue team's pedestal until the
>> person carrying the blue card got killed or when the red team succeeds
>> and makes it through the blue door at which point they score a point
>>and the blue card is replaced.
There are rules like this for a game they play in our "residence hall" or dorm
:)
One base is in the east wing on the top (6th) floor and the other is in
the west wing on the bottom floor.
for Tag:
>>> How about a game of 'tag', where lasers can be used to open doors
>>> but don't affect other players? Someone on the RIME network mentioned
>>> this, and it is an interesting idea. Basically one ship would be 'it' and
>>> chase the other around the mines, ramming into them to 'tag' them. This
>>> would be the ultimate test of pilot skills. When a ship tags another, it
>>> could cloak temporarily to get away, or the ship that is 'it' would have a
>>> 10-second countdown before it could give chase. Just a thought...
Hmmm.... I dunno. I think if you made it so the newly tagged person was made
to be it for a seconds regardless of who he touches it would work. That
way the program wouldn't get confused as the two ships collide and bounce
off of each other. I've driven robots into the lava before and we just start
bouncing off of each other.
The person who tagged him should get the hell away from him
as fast as he could. Make it like _real_ tag. The fun part about being
tagged is that you normally don't expect it (get it in the back) and whip
around and REACH for that guy to get him back.
Also, I think what would work very well is that you would have to tag the guy
using the front of your ship. This could be easily done by a VERY short range
weapon, say one of those plasma balls widths in front. (no damage)

Um.
First, we're not asking them to mirror every other game. Noone's asked
for turtles and mushrooms to jump on and a princess at the end. :)
Second, you don't HAVE to play these variations if you don't want to.
Third, just because YOU don't like the idea doesn't mean the Parallax can't
increase its customer base by including things that _other_ people might like.
Fourth, of _course_ they're going to fix the bugs and make minor adjustments
in gameplay first. But then they are going to make an advanced version for
this summer. It could be put into that... Or even Descent II. What we're
talking about isn't for Descent 1.2. Like they could program all of this in
overnight and make the gameplay good... sheesh.
Lastly, these kind of variations would add to the game. Look, Spectre had a
"free for all" variation. Doom has it. Descent has it. Every new 1st person
perspective game has it. ITS GETTING OLD.
They've already mirrored Doom's deathmatch. And I'm not going back to Doom to
play deathmatch.
It's too flat.
Spectre's ideas were new and fresh. Capture the flag, soccer,
etc. were great! Why not allow Parallax the chance to think about giving us
other ways to play their game.
It would make their game sell.
(hello? Parallax? <subliminal>do it<subliminal>)

You guys play Descent like madmen over there, I hear. Why wouldn't you want a
variation on the game? Still getting your butt beat in this one? :)
I wish I had time to play more multiplayer... but then again... I have school.
Sucks.
Why give us this great network and tell us to buy this great computers and
then give us _school work_? I'm going to hate losing this fiber-optic
connection. :( I'm spoiled, I know.
But then again... I'm going to be keeping my girlfriend's P60 with PCI video
over the summer (she doesn't trust putting it in storage). We both have
network cards. Tee hee! It's going to be a DOOMII/Heretic/Descent
multiplayer extravaganza this summer. All I have to do is boot the computers
up, connect the piece of fiber optic between them, run IPX, and play till my
eyes bug out. :)
Look, Rob, no hard feelings.
You don't like the idea. Fine. I accept that.
But we all have our $0.02 to put in.
Don't try to shut me up with "Go Play Doom If You Want To Play Deathmatch"
I resent someone telling me what to do.
I'd play Spectre if anyone else out there wanted to. But they don't, it's
old, it's flat-ish (you can jump... whoowhee), they want to play Descent.
BTW, how is the new Spectre game? Any good? They sell 2-player licenses now.
Good idea I thought.
