There is another probably cause if your modem is on COM3 and COM4 and 
is a problem with the code Descent uses to detect the UART type for
those two ports.  This has been fixed in version 1.1 which will be made
available as either a patch or a new distribution of two disks shortly.

If you use a COM3 or COM4 modem, you should pick up the 1.1 when it is
posted.  Or if you can change to COM1 or COM2 the problem will likewise
disappear.  The only side effects of this bug are the sound and probably
the program will not correctly detect your UART type for 38.4k baud.

Special thanks to the folks on IRC #descent who pointed this out within
hours of release.
