For anyone who wants descent to play smoother here are some tips:
The first time I played Descent I got the impression that it was "smooth as
glass" on my system, which I still think is true. HOWEVER, while adjusting
everything on my system to better play the game I boosted the joystick
sensitivity all the way up as high as it would go. I didn't know it, but
that setting actually makes descent a little jerky. So for days I kept
wondering why descent was no longer "smooth as glass" on my system.
I guess what was happening is that when you set it to it's highest setting
with an anolog joystick one can go from 0-whatever in a second, the game is
forced to try to catch up to your lightning quick movements and vioala,
jerkyness. So set this to center and things will go smooth.
If you REALLY want to know how smooth descent can go, reduce your screen
size as small as it can go and play it that way for a while... thats how
smooth "smooth as glass" really is, which, even on a pentium with an ATI
mach it does not do (atleast not on the three pentium 90's that I have
tried).
