Descent help: Thanks, but...

I just wanted to thank all the people out there who helped me out withmy
little Descent problem. It gave me the opportunity to screw around with
some neat features in DOS 6.0. =^)

Unfortunately, for all the extra memory everyone helped me free up, it
didn't do any good. The game still ran as slow as Greg Kite on my
486DX-33. I found out the main culprit for this was my video card, a
Cirrus Logic with 1MB VRAM, but no DOS acceleration, only Windoze.

It is for this reason (and out of protest for Interplay not putting out a
3.5" disk version of Virtual Pool) that I'm deleting Descent from my hard
drive. I was really hoping to try out IHHD and run a deathmatch or two
with this game, but at the speed it's going (about 10-15 fps in an empty
room, 5 fps with robots attacking), there's just no way I'll be able to
keep up with all the DX4s and Pentiums on the net in ANY deathmatch.

Some have suggested getting a better video card, but at the moment, I
simply can't afford it. Even if I could, I wonder whether or not it
would be all that great an investment, since PCs are just going to get
faster and faster year after year, and PC games will be trying to push
them in one way or another. The PC I have now can do pretty much
everything I want without a CD-ROM, the lone exception being most of the
games on the PC market -- a good number of which I couldn't care less
about. As a result, I'm wondering if it's even worth upgrading anything
on my PC *just* for games. I still have a number of games for PC I like
to play (One Must Fall, XQuest, MS-Arcade, etc.), and as long as
independent programmers are out there putting their wares on the net, I
suppose there'll always be *something* out there for the little guys like
me who can't afford all these upgrades.

In the meantime, I guess I'll wait for Epic to release that still-in-
final-beta-out-in-two-weeks OMF modem patch before I test out IHHD.
*sigh* C'est la vie...
