Strange raster with ATI radeon 9000 pro (sapphire)?

Hello,
I've been getting some really weird video output while
playing generals. I dont' know how to describe it.
there are screenshots here:

http://www.linuxlots.com/~code_zmith/tech/

This seems to happen randomly. All of a sudden, the screen
just gets these "shards" of raster blasting all over
the place. I can still play the game, but the constant flashing
on the screen nearly gives me epileptic fits.

After this happens, I must reboot to get rid of this effect.
Simply restarting generals does not fix it.

Does anyone know what is going on here?
Thanks

Maybe overheating problems causing graphics corruption? There seems to be a lot
of action going on in these shots, and Generals does tax the cooling system. If
you can find a situation where you can reproduce the problem repeatedly (e.g.
"it always does this 20 minutes into this replay") then try using super cooling
on your computer (take off the side pannel and stick a big housefan in front) to
see if overheating is the problem.

This is obvious but also do try updating Generals and your various drivers
(graphics card, AGP/chipset, etc.)

Interesting that you bring up the cooling issue ... was playing User Map
Fight for Baghdad and in the midst of the game I received a "Serious
Problem" error from my computer ... referenced that a component may be
overheating or failing!!! Windows shut everything down and took me back to
my desktop. I manually shut down and all worked fine again when I started
up the next day.

Interesting ... wondered if it had to do with an overworked graphics card
...

Running XP
PIII 1.7Ghz
512 M Ram
nVidia Gforce

Overheating eh? I will make note. I played for 3 hours yesterday
without any problems. If I can reproduce it, I will post here.

THanks for the suggestions.

There has been a rumor going around about ATI's CATALYST 3.8 drivers causing
overheating problems in 9800 series cards. This may be what you're
experiencing.

ATI has already released CATALYST 3.9. Try upgrading to the new drivers.
