To get the pleasant surprise (alternate ending video), you must complete
the mission by taking out the Temple of Nod with the Ion Cannon.

Make sure you've destroyed (or taken over) all the other Nod buildings
and units, leaving just the Temple. In particular, make sure there
aren't any stealth tanks hiding anywhere.

Now attack the Temple with Orcas, ground units and/or air raid, until
the building is down to the red zone. Stop all the attacks, then hit it
with the Ion Cannon.

If any troops escape from the building, kill them by whatever means is
handy.

Dune 2000 is an updated version of the older game Dune 2, with improved
game engine (taken from C&C and Red Alert).

I haven't played it (Westwood haven't released a Mac version), but it is
similar to C&C as far as game mechanics are concerned. The storyline is
based around the Dune books by Frank Herbert, or the movie by David
Lynch. You get to play House Atreides, House Harkonnen or House Ordos
(which appear to have been made up for the game - they aren't in the
books).

Check out www.eastore.ea.com. You should be able to buy it online.
Electronic Arts took bought Westwood last year. They are selling a
"Worldwide Warfare" package (listed in their top ten), which includes
C&C Gold, Covert Operations, Red Alert, Counterstrike and Aftermath. It
costs US$49.95, if I remember right. (I recently bought it here in New
Zealand, but I've only used the Covert Ops so far - with my Mac version
of C&C.)

Last time I checked they still weren't selling the standalone Red Alert,
but it is listed if you do a search by company on Westwood.

Why are we (still) waiting?

Judging from the magazine ads, it won't be much like the preview that is
played at the end of C&C.
