Most games like c&c have their own internal routines for compressing data and error correction/checking. The modems built in routines mess that up. Make sure that in your settings, the person answering has his answer string set to ATA (which is standard hayes, like the USR uses. I don't know about your friend's modem.) If you still have problems, see if your modems are able to step down to 7200 bps. If you still have problems, try 2400 bps and bear the pain of a slow game. A method that often works when I have connection problems is to change the modems default mode of trying the highest bps rate and then stepping down to each speed until one works, to starting at the slowest speed and stepping up to one works. Your modems may not have that function, but if they do, try it out if you have problems connecting at 9600. Check your manuals for this information if you don't know it. Each make of modem has its own quirks. If all fails, get a null modem cable, bring the two machines together in the same room and play over a serial link. It's faster that way anyway. Try your local Computer City or other computer store and say "I want a null modem cable to play Command & Conquer with two computers."
