Do you have two CD-capable drives (e.g. DVD drive and CD-RW drive)?
If so, are you putting the CD into the first drive that the system detects?
There was a bug with Yuri's Revenge, released not so long before Renegade
(so maybe the same bug crept in), in which the game would try to read both
CD drives when loading and hang. They fixed this, but IIRC, bizarrely RA2
(which I'd guess was written before many people had two CD drives so it
wasn't an issue) expects the RA2 CD to be in the first drive recognised by
the system (in my case the CD-RW) or you get the symptoms described. Thus my
son was playing YR from one drive and I was playing RA2 from the other and
neither had to swap CDs after the other had been on.
If you have two drives, try loading a CD (any CD) into the other drive. If
this doesn't work, try swapping the CDs. If it still doesn't work, check
Westwood for a patch (they had a patch for the problem in YR before I'd even
bought it).
