Actually there is very little strategy in Red Alert. I've been playing in Netleague for Red Alert and most of the games have come down to position and build strategy. After you come up with a good build strat you simply repeat ad-infintum on everyone else. It gets rather boring after a while, so you start making up rules to limit game play to force more strategy into the game but somehow it just isn't the same. I still play league but not as much as I used to because it bores me. I suppose I've just overplayed it. Hopefully Counterstrike will spark some new interest or at least make it more of a strategic game. I've heard that C&C95 is more of a strategy game than Red Alert but I haven't seen it yet so I don't know which is better as far as forcing you to think about what you are doing.
