I often hear oldsters complain, "when I was a kid we could do math in our head" (among many other feats they could accomplish). Yet back in 1961 there were complaints that young people--today's oldsters--were just as inept as people complain today. https://books.google.com/books?id=XEIqAAAAIBAJ&lpg=PA5&dq=%22ibm%20701%22&pg=PA5#v=onepage&q=%22ibm%20701%22&f=false (article on far right side "Too many can't figure simple interest")

The article isn't "Too many can't figure simple interest", it is "Too many can't figure interest, simple rules of credit", although I can understand someone who hasn't studied this stuff not understanding that "simple interest" has a very specific meaning in financial management.

Some other examples. I think it was a piece from Ancient Greece, and it was used to make fun of the peace movement, hippies, etc. I forget. About 1968 is when I saw this one. There was a wall poster, about 1970, that claimed to be quoting a certain Third Reich official, but they were quoting Nixon.

It wouldn't surprise me if the oldest such lament was heard in some cave not long after the concepts youth, elders, today and respect first made it into something that one day would become language. -- Steve O'Hara-Smith | Directable Mirror Arrays C:\>WIN | A better way to focus the sun The computer obeys and wins. | licences available see You lose and Bill collects. | http://www.sohara.org/

Looxury, we 'ad to make nests in't trees. And don't get me started about this newfangled "fire" malarky. -- Bah, and indeed, Humbug.

During an Ofsted inspection it is, or was (I've been retired a few years) normal to expect to see evidence this requirement is being met. Contrary to popular myth, multiplication tables are still learned, as are 'manual' techniques for division, multiplication, finding common factors, etc. -- Suspect someone is claiming a benefit under false pretences? Incapacity Benefit or Personal Independence Payment when they don't need it? They are depriving those in real need! https://www.gov.uk/report-benefit-fraud
