Today, we take for granted maintenance free TV sets. But in the old
days, sets needed regular service, and many men made a living as
TV repairman.

A LIFE ad by RCA goes into detail.

My favorite Three Stooges episode is of the iceman. Indeed,
whenever I see a long flight of steps, I think of that episode.

(I think one can actually find the steps used to film that
episode.)

In an episode of Car 54, an older woman (played by the great
Molly Picon), was given a modern apartment. She demanded an
icebox, so the iceman would come up and visit with her. She
thought her modern apartment was a jail.

That episode, made circa 1961, was very phophetic.

I have lived in three apartments in my life. I agree, I felt like I
was in a cage. I had tv, my computer, dvds of movies and stand up
comedy. There were days I had to make my self stay there.

I lived in the tower blocks at Essex Uni and thought nothing of it
but nowadays appreciate a garden to go out to, to relieve the
boxed in feeling. I'd never go on a prison ship, AKA cruise liner,
for the same reason

It was time to get something newer when the TV repairman, having a bit of trouble centering the picture, decided to remove the ion trap on our old TV set. One that didn't have an aluminized (grey instead of brown) picture tube.

But we were able to afford to get a new one before the ion burn became too severe.

There is nothing quite like seeing the night sky from the deck of a ship
far out to sea. Even during daylight, seeing the sea stretch out to
'join' the sky all around you is quite awe inspiring.

The difference withg those tower blocks was that each one (and each
floor) was a community. My floor had me, a guy from Aylesbury, a
Mauritian, a Malaysian, someone from the Isle of Wight, a Pole, a Greek,
an Iranian, two black Africans and a white South African.

As a youngster, I took a great interest when the TV repair man visited.
Of course, in those days (the 1960s mainly), TVs were all valve (tube)
based and not nearly as reliable as now. I only recall one occasion when
he could repair the set in-situ.

We have a modern Smart Samsung TV, under a 5 year warranty, which
developed a fault. The company dispatched a repair man, who diagnosed a
fault to a particular board (I forget which one). Needless to say, he
didn't have one with him and returned a week later. (The TV did work,
it was the 'Smart' side which was the problem.) Needless to say, on
replacing the board, the fault remained to the TV needed to go off to
the workshop.

The, married, hall of residence we lived in at Uni was a bit like that.
For all but a short time, we were the only UK couple as far as I recall.
It was a great opportunity to meet people from different
countries/cultures etc.

My floor was students who were on 9 month licences (overseas students,
and postgrads).

As I recall, you were permitted to stay in the hall we were in for 2
years as a general rule. We found a rented place after 2 years which we
remained in for a few years until we bought our first house.

The point was that we didn't have to move out during the short vacations.
Everyone else did. So we were put on upper floors to keep us out of the
way (12th floor in my case).

I didn't pay much atten, but I have wondered if I saw the Greater and
Lesser Magellenic Clouds, and the Southern Cross during the two trips
my ship went to the Carribean Sea. I was rather busy and didn't think
of it, until several years later. Too late. And no, a photo just isn't
the same.

My best scene from a ship is leavi, looking back and thinking would
you (i) ever return. Going by airplane is not as sad.

My mother travelled to and from the US in the 1930's by ship. You
could bring an immence amount of junk along, the other day we found
an autoharp that she brought.

Oh, now I understand.

That is the 'norm' (having to move out) in most UK halls but the one
were were in was year round, at least for the block we were in- which
was for married students.

I seem to have a retinue of life's losers hanging onto my every word
who stalk me to whichever NGs which I post.

It's a form of character worship and envy, but a negative expression
of both.
