Computers, Anyone? (not to be confused with the existing thread Computers, anyone?)

Obsolescence Guaranteed are now shipping their ersatz PDP11/70
front panels, to be used with a RPi3 running SimH.

It'd be good to get back to a (reasonably) orthogonal ISA
with memory being as acessible as are registers.

Altogether now, from those of we regularly toggling
in the paper tape bootstrap ...

But everything runs so fast that much of the time you don't need to do
assembly. C is fine, and even interpreted languages are snappy. I've
got a quad core 3.4GHz computer now with 8gigs of RAM (and the whole
computer is tiny), I haven't yet done anything with it to make it really
work hard. It idles at a slower speed, I don't even notice.

A computer is a fascinating complex machine to be appreciated for its
own sake and so assembly (or even machine code for the real aficionado)
is the only way to deal with it.

Also, spent the first 10 years of my professional life as a PDP11
assembly softie.

So there! :-)
