On IBM mainframes, it was common to replace the IBM given sort with an independent sort developed by the Whitlow company. It was called Syncsort and it remains in use today. Here is a 1976 ad for the program, showing its features: https://books.google.com/books?id=oLEYjJy98MsC&lpg=PA60&dq=sperry%20remington&pg=PA3#v=onepage&q=sperry%20remington&f=false https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syncsort
